It was Fan Appreciation Night at Gund
Arena with the Cavaliers facing Milwaukee in their last home game of the
season. In all, it was reported the Cavs were to give away more than
$250,000 worth of merchandise. Including in the giveaways were the
players' game jerseys and shoes.
The Cavs also came into the game with
a chance to double their win total from last year's 17 wins.
Before LeBron James gave away his stuff, it was what he did in them during
the game that gave the Cavaliers a 93-89 victory over the Bucks. James'
dunk in the waning seconds capped a Cavalier rally to send the 16th
sellout crowd home happy. James scored 27 points, nine assists, and seven
rebounds. Jeff McInnis showed why he was missed during the Cavs stretch of
losses. He threw in 16 points, dished out seven assists, and committed
only one turnover. Zydrunas Ilgauskas played a solid game with 18 points
(10 from the foul line) and 14 rebounds. Carlos Boozer added 18 points,
also.
The Bucks (41-40) was still in search of claiming the fourth spot in the
East for home-court advantage in the playoffs. But with the loss, they
fell into a tie with Miami and one game remaining. Despite the losing
record, the Cavs (34-47) not only doubled their win total from last year,
but they showed dramatic improvement over the course of the season.
Cleveland held a record of 23-18 at Gund Arena, which should be a stepping
stone into next year.
Desmond Mason scored 25 for the Bucks and added 11 rebounds. Keith Van
Horn came off the bench to score 15 points in the loss. Michael Redd went
just 5-12 from the field for 12 points.
Cleveland came out strong in the first quarter. They took an early 10-6
lead. They then went on a 7-3 spurt to end the quarter and held a 27-19
lead after one period of play.
Milwaukee came roaring back. Mason led a 28-10 Buck charge to take a 47-37
lead with 1:45 to play in the quarter. The Cavs went on a mini 8-3 run to
close the gap at 50-45 going into the half. Mason had 21 points, seven
rebounds, and four assists in the first half of play.
The Bucks kept their lead for the entire third period and scored the first
two points of the fourth quarter to hold a 75-69 lead. Then the Cavs went
on a 13-1 run to capture an 82-76 lead. The Cavs then came back and
finally took the lead for good, 88-87, on a James breakaway dunk.
Ilgauskas capped it off with a pair of free throws.
The Cavs had 26 fast break points compared to the seven by Milwaukee. The
Bucks out rebounded the Cavs 47-39. The Cavs held the advantage in assists
30-23. Cleveland shot 46 percent while Milwaukee hit on 38 percent from
the field.
The Cavs close out the season Wednesday in New York to face the Knicks.
