With their playoff hopes riding on
every game's whim, the Cavs were down in Memphis to get back the winning
feeling. But instead, it looked like a team
uninspired for any playoff aspirations and looking forward to their summer
vacation.
With Jeff McInnis nursing a new injury, a sloppy defense, and a
sluggish offense, the now six-game losing streak looks to end no time
soon. Behind James Posey, the Grizzlies dismantled the Cavs 92-74. Memphis
(55-39) was playing without three of their top players (Jason Williams,
Pau Gasol, and Bonzi Wells) but still managed to have no problem
controling the Cavaliers.
With the Cavs (32-46) six-game slide, they now have lost 10 out of their
last 11 games. This all coming after that astonishing seven-game winning
streak. With the loss, the Cavs stand right on the edge of elimination
from the playoffs. If the Cavs lose one more game or if each Boston and
New York both win one more game, Cleveland will mathematically knocked
out.
Local native Posey led the Memphis charge and played with urgency. He
scored 24 first half points. For the game the Xavier graduate went 6-8
from the field, 4-5 from the 3-point line, and 15-18 from the foul line.
He had 35 points in all, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
DaJuan Wagner came off the bench with 12 first half points to give the
Cavs some much needed help. Wagner scored a team-high 18 points in the
game. It was a homecoming of sorts as Wagner entered the NBA after one
year at Memphis.
The Cavs led 10-9 with about six minutes left in the first quarter. Then
Memphis went on a 19-7 run, including a 15-0 spurt, that propelled them to
a 28-17 first quarter lead. The Grizzlies shot 50 percent in the first
quarter and outrebounded the Cavs by a 14-7 margin.
The second quarter was the Posey show. Wagner and LeBron James did all
they could to keep it close. But the Grizzlies couldn't be stopped to
extending their lead to 55-39 going into the half.
Cleveland wouldn't pose any threat until they got to within 10 points
early in the fourth. After Wagner and Tony Battie made a couple of jumpers
to start the fourth, the Cavs cut the lead to 76-66. Memphis called a
timeout and righted the ship. Cleveland would score just eight more fourth
quarter points and the Grizzlies cruised to the win.
The win gave the Grizzlies their first 50 win season in franchise history
and their fourth straight over the Cavs. After some nice shooting in the
first half, both teams ended up shooting 40 percent for the game. The
Grizzlies hit seven 3-pointers compared to one for the Cavs. Cleveland was
outrebounded 49-41, and 16-10 on the offensive glass.
James had 14 points and five assists. Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 10 points,
six rebounds, and five blocks.
Lorenzen Wright came off the bench to net 10 points and grab 10 rebounds.
Earl Watson had six points, eight rebounds, and eight assists.
The Cavs play Miami back-to-back this Friday and Saturday.
