The Cavs returned home Saturday night
looking for that winning feeling after a road loss to Milwaukee the
previous day. But once again a poor defensive showing did the Cavs in, in
a 103-100 defeat by the visiting Golden State Warriors. It was the
Warriors first win in Cleveland since November of 1990.
LeBron James did all he could to help capture a win with
34 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. But it was Jason Richardson who
topped LeBron and kept the Cavs reeling. Richardson scored the last 10
Golden State points, 35 in all, to cap off the win.
The Cavs were once again without PG Jeff McInnis while the Warriors played
without injured C Erick Dampier. McInnis is expected back for the Cavs
next game.
Carlos Boozer added 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Zydrunas Ilgauskas
threw in 17 points. But it wasn't enough to overcome the lack of defensive
presence that seems to be a common flavor for the Cavs of late.
The Cavs held their ground early and held a 20-18 lead with three and a
half minutes to play in the first quartrer. Then Golden State went on a
11-2 run and take a 29-22 lead to end the quarter.
Things didn't get much better in the second quarter as Golden State pretty
much got whatever they wanted on the offensive end. The Warriors shot 61
percent in the first half while the Cavs shot a miserable 34 percent. With
the disperity in play, Golden State took a 56-48 lead into the half.
James led a Cavs third quarter surge. He scored 11 points in the period
and brought the Cavs back to a tie at 69 after a 15 foot jumper with
almost four minutes to play. But the Cleveland wouldn't score the rest of
the quarter and the Warriors took advantage and control. Golden State took
a 75-69 lead into the fourth.
James brought the Cavs within three after he made a 3-pointer with 1:13 to
play. With 16 seconds remaining and the Cavs down 103-100, James came
around an Ilgauskas pick and lost control of the ball. He got doubled and
passed to
Ilgauskas at the top of the 3-point line and his long range attempt went
off mark.
The loss dropped the Cavs to three games behind the Celtics and the Knicks.
With six games remaining, the Cavs are mathematically alive, but reality
may be sinking in. For Cleveland to have a chance, they are gonna have to
run the table and get a lot of help from Knick opponents. The Cavs have a
tie-breaker with the Knicks but not with Boston. So they have a better
chance if New York faltered and tied them.
The Cavs shot 37 percent for the game while the Warriors shot 53 percent.
The Cavs outrebounded Golden State 47-39, but the Warriors dished out more
assists 23-17.
Mike Dunleavy scored 23 points with five assists and five rebounds. And
Troy Murphy added 18 points for the Warriors.
The Cavs next game is against Toronto at home Tuesday night.
